The Tarbela 5th Extension Hydropower Project (T5) has reached a key milestone in the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA)’s efforts to access international carbon markets, marking a significant step toward climate-focused financing.
The project is projected to reduce approximately 565,905 tons of CO₂ emissions annually, contributing to a total reduction of over 5.65 million tons during its fixed 10-year crediting period. The verification process has now commenced, and upon successful completion, the project will be registered with the Global Carbon Council (GCC), making it Pakistan’s first hydropower initiative to achieve GCC registration.
This progress has been supported by the World Bank, alongside the completion of key requirements, including project submission and the engagement of GCC-approved international verifier LGAI Technologies.
As part of the verification process, a site visit was conducted by LGAI’s local auditor. During the visit, GM/PD T5 Umair Manan briefed the auditor on overall project developments. Director (Civil) Faisal Hayat and Assistant Director Environment Asima Mughal also shared updates on construction progress, as well as environmental and social management measures.
The auditor expressed satisfaction with the project’s progress and compliance with environmental and social standards.
Upon completion, the Tarbela 5th Extension Hydropower Project is expected to play a vital role in advancing clean energy generation and supporting Pakistan’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
